The Smart Phonedler

Greetings! In today's world, anything without an "i" as a prefix, hasn't got much value to it. The _ahambhaavam_ (sense of I – ego) has an altogether different meaning these days. It's all about whether you possess a coveted iDevice or not and if you don't, or if you are even remotely nonchalant about its existence in your neighbour's pocket, you'll be looked down with disdain. It's hard to not be amused about how cellphone companies cash in on people's ignorance and thrust on them, pieces of silicon with a highly polished LCD screen. Furthermore, you'll have to shell out thousands every month, just for some sparingly genuine usage of mail and the exceedingly trash talk on facebook and the like. And before I proceed, this shall be applicable to all you android junkies, windows phone wizards, blackberry bosses, bada brigadiers and any other smartphone user. Also, a piece of word to people who know me. If you think this is a case of sour grapes just because I lost my iPod Touch and am scared as hell to get another device, then, in a way, you're right; but I'm happy that I found it out early and through the hard way that I don't need a smartphone in my life, at least for now! 🙂 It is a bit annoying and sad to see people deluded into getting smartphones mainly because his next cabin mate has got one! A classic reenactment of the [cap seller and the monkeys story](https://www.childstoryhour.com/storykids6.htm).

My favourite tools

So, I was musing about what to blog next and had this idea of posting all the utilities/programs/services I frequently use and of course thank the person who influenced me with the software. I'm rather obsessed with many of these tools and if you think a tool you use is better than what I use, ping me @borncrusader at twitter or identi.ca 🙂 We'll debate about it and possibly I'll learn about the tool you use too. 😛

Enshittification

Cory Doctorow termed this word in 2022. This is a word that represents the state of much of software today. Not just the end state, but often intermediate states and workflows/processes that lead us there. And I fear LLMs without the right mindset might get us there sooner.

While an abundance mindset is good, it’s often the decadence mindset that leads us there.

On a daily basis, I come across folks who just prompt the LLM to run simple bash commands that’d at the most take you another couple mins etc. but in the process, you learn something. And there are tools like butterfish, while being incredibly cute, can easily push one to a mindset where you don’t learn what happens underneath!

And then there’re folks who essentially use the LLM to churn 10x output. But output not necessarily translates to outcomes long-term. But in an environment where your worth is determined by the output in the near-term, one has to adapt to using these tools else the 10x output engineer is going to get the early worm.

Only time will tell if this will last.
